Midnightish performance by Mike & Vanja
Mike Eblen stumbled across an Argentine Tango class in 2007, and he stumbled through his first few lessons. What started as a casual hobby eventually snowballed into a full-on obsession. Weekly group classes in Asheville, North Carolina were not enough.
If you asked Mike where the turning point was, he would probably tell you it fell somewhere between driving twelve hours for a weekend festival and putting his chances of graduating college on time at risk so he could fit in a trip to Portland for Valentango.
Mike has studied privately with a plethora of world renowned teachers including Alex Krebs, Tomas Howlin, Brigitta Winkler, Homer and Cristina Ladas and Robin Thomas to just name a few.
Mike’s philosophy on tango revolves around an emphasis on pure kinesthetic communication. He works to empower both the leader and the follower to take control of their own voice within the dance.
Mike is available for private lessons in NY from Sept 14 until the 24th. Contact Mike at:

He is completely fanatic about the dance, and shares his passion with his students. He teaches for the social dance floor, emphasizing the improvisational side of the dance through a strong communication between the lead and follow and on musicality. Alexis Rosen has been dancing Tango for nine years, and teaching for the last four. He first gained notice as an original and creative leader of Tango Nuevo. However, in the last couple of years he has focused closely on close embrace as well. Alexis believes that great dance is built on musicality, connection to the partner, and fundamental movement technique. Many of his classes start with a specific sequence of movements, which are then used to explore those three topics in depth. The first teachers to strongly influence Alexis were Robin Thomas and Mario Consiglieri. While he has learned from numerous other teachers in Buenos Aires and the U.S. since then, the biggest influence on his dance comes from the many great followers he has danced with, including his partner Vanja.
This week, Metin will teach the class and Ilene will guest DJ:
8.30pm classes included with admission:
upper level with Metin
intermediate with Jennifer
beginners with Paul
Uninterrupted dancing with DJ Ilene
More about Metin:
Metin Yazir is the founder of the Baila Tango school which he started in Munich, Germany in 1993. Baila Tango has become synonymous with great dancing. Many instructors have gravitated to the simple yet sophisticated methodology of Baila Tango. Gustavo Naveira had big influence in the way Metin developed his teaching style. Metin Yazir’s career has taken him to 91 cities in 26 countries as teacher and performer. His unique, fun and straightforward approach to teaching tango made him one of the most sought after instructors in the world. His careful analysis of the movement and interaction between partners, combined with his motivating presentation has earned him the admiration of tango dancers worldwide.
Baila Tango opened the gates for tango in Istanbul, Turkey, Metin’s homeland. In a matter of a few years, Baila Tango grew in Ankara, Izmir, Eskisehir and Bursa. In fact, the influence of his school has made Turkey the fastest growing tango community in the world.
Metin considers tango as a dialogue (as opposed to monologues by the dominant men) between two independent and actively participating individuals, connecting them at a higher level. Lead and follow concepts transcend to invitations and acceptances. This heightened respect for women is the foundation of this vision. The vision is inclusive: everyone can dance tango regardless of age, background, or body type. While the stage dancers bring their art to audiences, tango still belongs to the people from which it came.
Guest DJ Ilene Marder
In addition to being the founder and director of Woodstock Tango, Ilene has established a reputation as a popular, traditional Tango DJ, who DJ's regularly at milongas in NYC and at festivals (recently Boston & Chicago). She is a "traditional" DJ, using cortinas, tandas and the most beautiful classic tango ever recorded. (She is also adept at offering some lovely danceable surprises from the modern and alternative tango worlds...). She conducts MEET THE MUSIC sessions to better acquaint dancers with the key orquesta's of the Golden Age, and is available to DJ private parties and events, and more....
