Nov 26: Dominic Bridge and Katherine Gorsuch

Join Dominic, Kat and DJ Tine at Lounge this week!

Dominic Bridge (Portland OR and Italy) will teach the upper level class at 8.30pm, and perform at midnight with Katherine Gorsuch (NYC)

More about our stars...

In four years Dominic Bridge became one of the top young tango professionals in the world. In this time, he has performed up and down the west and east coasts, Chicago Tango Week ’09, Italy, and Buenos Aires, as well as in his hometown of Portland, Oregon. Dominic has spent the last year building a tango school and teaching full time in Florence, Italy. When his weekends were free, he took trips around Europe, spending a significant amount of time in Paris, Rennes, Berlin, Bäsel, Siracusa, and Catania. Dominic views tango in the same way he views any language: there are clear structure, grammar, and rules, all of which can be broken when understood. He knows these things form a foundation necessary in communicating in one’s own way. His effectiveness as a teacher grows from his deep understanding of movement and his ability to clearly communicate.

Katherine Gorsuch's hybrid expression of tango is derived from the many dance influences in her life.
Her interest began as a child, exploring various dance forms; ballet, modern dance, and flamenco. At 18, she began dancing tango in New York City. In the last year, she was partnering Robin Thomas, and has also worked with: Adam Hoopengardner, Felipe Martinez, Henry Finkelstein, and Jay Abling.
Katherine has taught at festivals in the US and in Europe and has spent the last few months teaching in Berlin. She is also one of the founding members and organizers of the Hunter College Tango Club, established in 2006. Dancing in Europe, Buenos Aires, and across the United States has contributed to Katherine's inspirational musicality and connection. She brings a youthful energy and sweet madness to the dance floor.

Nov 19: Nigel Smith and Katherine Gorsuch

This week join Nigel and Kat for a great class at 8.30pm and midnight performance!

DJ Tine

More about our stars:

Nigel Smith
Nigel was born in Montreal, grew up in Canada and the US, and lives in Paris, where he dances, teaches, DJs and sings opera. He has taught tango all over Europe, as well as in Egypt, China and Australia.

Nigel says: " Tango is a language spoken all over the world, and each dance is as unique as each conversation you will ever have.
I treat the tango as a language when I dance, and when I teach. My goal is to help dancers express themselves in a personal way. I'll help you build a vocabulary, but learning new things to say is not even half of the work. In a conversation as in tango, what we say is a response to what our partner says, and vice versa. A good conversation is an two-way exchange of interesting, funny, pertinent and surprising interactions, and listening is as important as talking. The same goes in tango! So, along with steps, there's a lot of work on listening: to the music, to each other, even to ourselves."

More about our stars

ANDRES AMARILLA
In 1986, Andres was a bored 10-year-old sitting around his house in Villa Crespo (a neighborhood of Buenos Aires), watching TV. Although tango had existed for nearly 100 years by that point, there was practically no tango being danced in the city of Buenos Aires at that moment. As luck or fate or chance would have it, a program came on TV featuring Juan Carlos Copes (the most famous tango stage dancer of all time) dancing tango. Transfixed and fascinated, Andres sat through the program and then promptly began a program of whining and cajoling to get his mom to find him tango lessons, of which there were practically none at the moment. A year later, when the local blacksmith began teaching tango classes in a neighborhood community center, Andres's mom enrolled him, and the rest is history.

Within a year, Andres was studying tango with Gustavo Naveira, who has since become tango's most famed pedagogue. And within three years, Andres was dancing on stage in the dance company of the very same Juan Carlos Copes whom he had seen on TV just a few years before.

In the 23 years since Andres began dancing tango, the dance has been transformed from a throw-back danced quietly by several couples of grandparents in outlying Buenos Aires neighborhoods to a worldwide phenomenon enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds in hundreds of cities. Andres has had a unique vantage point on this explosion. He remembers taking the 93 bus with a group of tango students for over an hour to get from the city center to the far-flung neighborhood of Villa Urquiza in order to seek out and learn from the few die-hard milongueros (milonga-goers) who had stopped dancing tango neither during the 1950s when everyone cool started dancing rock n' roll, nor during the 1970s when the military government effectively quashed all cultural life in the city of Buenos Aires. And while Andres is recognized today as one of the foremost dancers of contemporary tango, having taught & performed in over 40 cities on 5 continents, the roots of his dancing and teaching are firmly grounded with those abuelos in Villa Urquiza.

MEREDITH KLEIN
Although Meredith always wanted to dance, she grew up in a family where playing the piano was more important, and went to a school where playing field hockey was more important. As all parents hope, the piano ended up being a life-long source of joy and fulfillment, if also of neurosis and angst. Field hockey turns out unquestionably to have been a complete waste of time.

As a result of all of these distractions, Meredith didn't start dancing until adulthood. She began studying Argentine Tango in 1999, growing increasingly involved and obsessed to the point where in 2005 she sold everything she owned in order to move to Buenos Aires, where she promptly met Andres Amarilla, fell in love, bought an apartment that likely cost less than your car, and began dancing tango professionally.

In the past 5 years, Andres & Meredith have taught and performed in over 40 cities on 5 continents in countries including Australia, Turkey, Cyprus, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, and the US. In 2008, Andres & Meredith moved to Philadelphia and established the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School, where they have already taught over 600 students.

Back in 2006, when Andres & I performed, along with a few other couples, in Gustavo Naveira's milonga in Buenos Aires, Gustavo spoke about the state of tango, saying "El tango se baile mejor dia por dia." ("Day by day, tango is being danced better.") Whether I'm in Buenos Aires at the milongas there, on tour in other cities, or here in Philadelphia, I see that happening, and that fact excites and motivates me. As a dancer, teacher and administrator of our tango school, I'm working in my small way to fulfill that statement.

LUNG-KUEI LIN
While quietly going about his business, Lung-Kuei has attracted both envy and affection throughout the tango community. The men want to dance like him, and the women like to dance with him. His immersion in the tango world has been a happy success.
Lung-Kuei started studying tango in 2005 and began deejaying in 2007. Gradually he built a solid reputation as a deejay and now he’s invited to spin tunes at the most popular and best milongas and practicas in New York and festivals around the country. His choices are not strange: he just plays one good song after another, placed in sequence with sensitivity.
Lung-Kuei has zero attitude about what he does well, and always keeps a sense of humor about things, while remaining a serious milonguero, 100% dedicated to the craft, the life, and the music of tango.

A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Maestro Raúl Cabral is a dedicated teacher, a cultural envoy, and an exquisite dancer of improvisational social tango, Tango Milonguero.
The essence of his art and teaching is to develop the competence of each student through amplified awareness of musical rhythm and natural body movement. Dedicated to a non-choreographic methodology, both leader and follower learn to enrich the quality of their dance by learning to move correctly but freely, while expressing attention and sensitivity toward their partner. He makes the execution of this very complicated dance form seem easy utilizing a simple but detailed breakdown of movement techniques, balance and floor-craft. Known as “The Doctor”, Cabral guides the dancer, at any level, to discover and heighten their awareness of self and to expand their ability and confidence to dance on the social floor.

Agape Pappas's performances and classes have captivated students and onlookers alike across the United States, Canada and Europe. Her style fuses a variety of influences with their own interpretive skills, all emphasized by the type of improvisation that comes from a deep connection between partners. This connection is reflected in a teaching style that emphasizes the importance of walking, balance, focus, musicality, and technique that involves leading with the heart in both close and open embrace. The result, as seen in her performances, is a style imbued with a deep understanding of technique, a willingness to take risks, and a palpable sense of joy.

Lead and follow concepts transcend to invitations and acceptances. This heightened respect for women is the foundation of this vision. The vision is inclusive: everyone can dance tango regardless of age, background, or body type. Sept 24: Maxi Gluzman & AnnSophie Persson

This week, a class with Maxi Gluzman! Included with admission. Upper level. 8.30pm
topic: A Fun Easy Move You Can't Live Without!
Performance by Maxi and Ann Sophie Persson.

DJ Tine

More about our stars:

Maximiliano Gluzman is a porteno dancer who proudly continues the tradition of his home town's social dance.

He learned his first tangos when he was a child, bought his first tango record when he was fourteen, and began to pursue the dance when he was twenty one.

His tango, one of personal identity, inherits the inventiveness of the Buenos Aires tradition and was acquired through years of working with world known instructors, as well as through researching the social tango of the old masters. His subtle firm lead is the result of both practice and countless nights of dancing in Buenos Aires. And through his unique, flowing musicality he has found an endless vehicle for creativity and expression.

Maxi's professional life in tango is divided into two main areas: researching the dance of the old generation milongueros and teaching. Precisely, his teaching is about sharing the magic of the porteno dance with the rest of the world: its technique, its culture, and its mystery. A magic that, as difficult as it is to conceptualize, he has been able to transmit to his students from many countries.

Ann-Sophie Persson’s bio
Ann-Sophie Persson discovered her love for tango music in her childhood and started her search for the dance in her early teenage years in Sweden. She has been dancing tango regularly in New York City and Buenos Aires since 2000 and has studied with among others Julio Balmaceda and Corina De La Rosa, Milva Bernardi, Carlos Gavito, Graciela Gonzalez, Raul Poli, Elina Roldan and Omar Vega. Fri Sept 3: Gustavo Benzacry Saba & Maria Olivera

This week we welcome the delightful dancers Gustavo Benzacry Saba & Maria Olivera from Buenos Aires. They are respected and entertaining teachers, and their performance is a real crowd pleaser.

8.30 pm Upper level class with Gustavo and Maria.
Included with admission
Topic TBA

More about our stars:

Gustavo was born and raised in Buenos Aires, and has been dancing since the 1990s. He started out as an assistant teacher for various Masters. He developed his career as a teacher by studying techniques and by analyzing Tango as a social and psychological phenomenon. His experience as a teacher in other fields allowed him to trespass the limits of showing “movements” to place himself as a reference of Tango dance not only as a physical activity but moreover as a philosophy. Being a journalist and a researcher gave him the curiosity that led him to give expression to his studies.
He teaches regular classes at Salón Canning and Workshops in several milongas of Buenos Aires, as well as Workshops and lectures in the US and Europe, where he takes part of international tango meetings and Festivals.
As a dancer, he stands out for his agility and most of all for his endless creativity, which he bases in the ability of dominating the techniques and exploring the possibilities he’s being offered through the embrace and the release of the emotions.

Maria was born in Buenos Aires and raised in San Telmo, within a family of “tangueros”. When she was in her twenties she felt inspired by her deep love for the music and the poetry of her childhood and decided to start dancing it. She first studied with Gustavo Benzecry Sabá, and soon after she became his assistant in class and later on his partner. She studied follower’s techniques with several prestigious dancers and learned even more from milonguero Masters that taught her about the emotion of the dance.
She regularly teaches at Salón Canning and leads Workshops in other milongas and dance studios of the city. She also tours the world being part of Seminars, Festivals and performances.
Speaking English as a second language she teaches many students from all over the World, and in 2006 she translated Gustavo’s “Embracing Tango - Techniques and metaphors between tango and life” for what she got the recognition of many English speaking tango communities.

Together Gustavo and Maria teach regular classes at Salón Canning, and they tour the world participating in Festivals and International Tango events.
When they dance, they show their love for each other, the happiness of sharing the warmth of a cozy embrace and the fantasy of a movie where the audience is nothing but an active member of the story.

August 27: Eduardo Goytia and Yamila Viana

This week, we welcome Eduardo Goytia, popular NY teacher and 2007 Salon champion, and Yamila Viana, new sensation about town.
DJ Tine

Eduardo Goytia will teach the class themed "Salon Favorites" at 830pm. Upper level, included with admission.

Around midnight Eduardo will perform with Yamila Viana. Wear goggles to deal with sparks!

Eduardo was the 2007 US National Champion in Argentine Tango Salon, and with his partner Cyrena Drusine, the couple also became the only American couple to ever make it to the finals of the World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He teaches at DanceSport and Triangulo. Eduardo oversees the milonga from 6'1" up, and he's a popular dancer in NYC with ladies of all sizes.

Yamila Viana is from, uhm, Argentina, Italy and possibly other places. The mystery only adds to her allure! So you think dancing tango is more exciting than collecting stamps! But how about doing acrobatics hanging from the ceiling on a silk ribbon! Yamila does both (plus flamenco, ballet, contemporary dance and long walks on the beach), but with the ceiling so low and not much advance notice to fix it, today it will be her tango being shown off by Eduardo Goytia.

More about Eduardo
Eduardo Goytia is a well-known Tango instructor and performer based in New York City with over 13 years of teaching and performing experience. While he specializes in the Tango Salon style, Eduardo's range of knowledge is broad and he teaches across a wide array of styles including Tango Salon, Tango Nuevo and Tango for stage. He is especially known for his musciality and for understanding how differently Tango Salon, Tango Confiteria, Milonga and Vals should be danced. Eduardo is also recognized for his elegance, long lines (he's 6'1) and for demonstrating a deep connection with his partners.
Eduardo became the 2007 US National Champion in Argentine Tango Salon after which he and his championship partner, Cyrena Drusine, also became the only American couple to ever make it to the finals of the World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Officially representing the USA in the championships, they were invited to meet with the US Ambassodor to Argentina at the US Embassy and were honored by the Ambassador's presence at the semi-finals, the night Cyrena and Eduardo were announced as finalists.
Eduardo teaches group classes, workshops and privates at the dance studios Dancesport and Triangulo in Manhattan as well as at special events and schools around the city and abroad. Eduardo can be seen dancing regularly at milongas around the city as well as performing with visiting teachers and regular partners on stage, in shows and at special events.

There isn't any more bio about Yamila. You will just have to come and see.

Fresh back from Buenos Aires and brimming with new ideas!

8.30pm upper level class with Marc and Krissy, included with admission
"BACK CROSSES WITH A TWIST"

Midnight performance

Marc Hussner was born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal. At the age of 21, he left for Sweden where he lived for three years. Restlessness and a great desire to travel brought him to quit his job, sell his belongings and leave for a South American tour. In Argentina he found tango and dedicated himself exclusively to this art-form. Marc trained intensively, studying with world-class teachers like Gustavo Naveira & Giselle Anne, Chicho Frumboli & Juana Sepúlveda, Andrés Amarilla & Meredith Klein, among many others.
The years that Marc spent in Argentina allowed him to rapidly progress to a high level, gathering a lot of valueable information as he grew. Known for his dynamic yet graceful style, Marc combines different influences to develop a creative and modern tango, yet holding true to its origins. He believes a good dancer should combine all different aspects of tango: connection, musicality, technique, vocabulary and history. As an addition to his tango studies and to support his development as a dancer Marc practices pilates, elongation, studies Alexander technique and body awareness method.

Krissy is known for her intricate footwork and playful musicality. Though drawn to the athleticism of modern tango dancing, her versatility takes her over pre-established style boundaries to be fluent in everyone's embrace. Her enthusiasm and laid-back approach creates an easygoing learning environment, where students feel relaxed and inspired. Krissy emphasizes the importance for both leaders and followers to put technique, creativity and joy on equal grounds.
