Jan 18: Adam Cornett & Jenna Rohrbacher

This week, Lounge welcomes Adam Cornett from Portland and Jenna Rohrbacher from Portland/NY. Adan will teach my favorite vals musicality class, and perform with Jenna around midnight.

Classes at 830 included with admission:
Vals Musicality Upper level with Adam
Intermediate with Jennifer Wesnousky
Beginners with Paul

More about our guest stars:

Adam started dancing tango in 2000 when some college classmates dragged him into a class that “needed more leaders.” Since that moment he was hooked on dance. Adam’s main influence was Alex Krebs who, in 2004, offered him to be his understudy. Taking advantage of this offer Adam studied under Alex directly for a year while assisting in all of Alex’s classes. Adam now teaches in Portland and has focused his dance on musicality, connection, and opening the door for playful opportunities.

To Jenna Rohrbacher, dancing tango is an ongoing search for the complete. Balanced by complexity in movement and purity of sensation, her elegant dance embodies the traditional roles of Argentine tango and beyond. In teaching, Jenna encourages students to discover their individual connections to the music as well as focus on laying a foundation of solid technique upon which they can build their dance. Jenna has taught and performed for the last three years around the U.S. with several acclaimed dancers, including Alex Krebs, Robin Thomas, and Dominic Bridge, and has also performed in Europe and Buenos Aires. In September 2010, Jenna wrote, produced, and directed Tango Éxtasis! for the Miracle Theater’s La Luna Nueva festival in Portland; the following month, she taught and performed at Portland Tango Fest. Jenna is currently in New York teaching classes with Robin Thomas and private lessons.

More about our guest artists:
Maximiliano Gluzman is a porteño dancer who proudly continues the tradition of his home town's social dance.
He learned his first tangos when he was a child, bought his first tango record when he was fourteen, and began to pursue the dance when he was twenty one.
His tango, one of personal identity, inherits the inventiveness of the Buenos Aires tradition and was acquired through years of working with world known instructors, as well as through researching the social tango of the old masters. His subtle firm lead is the result of both practice and countless nights of dancing in Buenos Aires. And through his unique, flowing musicality he has found an endless vehicle for creativity and expression.
Maxi's professional life in tango is divided into two main areas: researching the dance of the old generation milongueros and teaching. Precisely, his teaching is about sharing the magic of the porteno dance with the rest of the world: its technique, its culture, and its mystery. A magic that, as difficult as it is to conceptualize, he has been able to transmit to his students from many countries.
Vanja Modzelewski is a highly experienced dancer in both - open and in close embrace. Her proficiency in the various styles of tango along with her sophisticated musicality has made her one of the better known female dancers in the US. Vanja's dance style is characterized with fluidity and sensual elegance. She has a profound knowledge of movements and partner connection and is a sought after lead who has been teaching group and private classes in tango with a partner and on her own for over 8 years. Currently Vanja is working together with Alexis Rosen. During the past years, among others, she has taught and performed with Constantin Rueger (Germany), Robin Thomas (NY), Murat Erdemsel (Washington, DC), Ney Melo (San Francisco), Hernan Brizuela (Buenos Aires), Armando Orzuza (Buenos Aires) and Junior Cervila (Buenos Aires).

More about our guest artists:

Damian Lobato started dancing in 1991 with renowned milonguero masters, including "El Pibe Palermo", (the former partner of Carmencita Calderon). After 8 years of dancing this style, he started training with Gustavo Naveira and Mariano "Chicho" Frumboli, and began teaching tango in different cities around Argentina until 2002. In 2003, 2004, and 2005 he was invited to tour Central America and Europe.  In 2006, he assisted Fabian Salas in CITA, the annual tango convention in Buenos Aires. Since May 2006, he has been teaching extensively in Europe in such places as Scotland, England, Holland, Italy, Spain and in 20 cities in the USA.
Damian's dance is characterized by a masterful combination of nuevo tango elements with traditional tango aesthetics. Seamless transitions between the various elements and a keen sense of musicality are emphasized in his dance and are applied in his teaching, training, and dancing.

Rebecca Shulman

Born in New York City, Rebecca studied classical ballet all her life and Contact Improvisation and yoga since 1993. Her tango career began in 1991 with Daniel Trenner, with whom she began to perform and to visit Buenos Aires. Her Tango teachers include Mingo and Esther Pugliese, Gustavo Naveira and Olga Besio, Tete and Maria, Juan Bruno, and Antonio Todaro. She has performed with the finest dancers of her generation, and given workshops across the U.S. Students everywhere seek Rebecca's clear instruction on improvisation, technique, adornments, and musicality. She has produced half a dozen popular instructional videos, available through Bridge to the Tango.
More than a dozen of New York's current tango teachers are Rebecca's former students. Her dance partners after Daniel have included Omar Vega, Metin Yazir, Constantin Rueger, and Evan Griffiths. Every Monday night she hosts and dj's NYC's longest-running milonga, Luna Tango Salon and Practica, which was started at Dance Manhattan over 15 years ago.
