more about our stars:

Hiro Tanaka:

Hiro is known for his creative style in the NY tango community. His dance is full of imagination that derives from his constant quest for possibilities in tango, and his passion for the dance is infectious.

Having studied with prominent Argentinean professionals such as Carlos Gavito, Gustavo Naveira &Giselle Anne, Dana Frigoli, Gaston Torelli & Moira Castellano, among others, Hiro has acquired his approach toward the dance. Now he is one of the practitioners of a New Generation Tango "SalonTango Nuevo," which comfortably unifies traditional and Nuevo tango on the floor and has become a new trend in Buenos Aires.

Also, Hiro's strong background in Japan's martial arts (Judo and Karate) has given his tango a special flavor to it, focusing more on the energy flow-- beyond mere step sequences on the floor.

Sabrina Volpi:

Sabrina is a native New Yorker and began dancing at the age of three. Her dance background ranges from Classic Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Pointe to Hip Hop and competitive Latin dances. She was introduced to Argentine tango in October 2007 at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and has been dancing with Hiro for approximately four years.

Sabrina has learnt intensively from top Argentinean instructors in Buenos Aires, Gustavo Naveira & Giselle Anne, Ezequiel Farfaro, Mario Consiglieri & Anabella Diaz-Hojman, Adrian Veredice & Alejandra Hobert, and others. Sabrina dances with passion and her dance is dynamic and full of positive energy; you often can catch her smiling and laughing on the dance floor!  When she’s not dancing, she has an appointment in the research sciences, which she also loves.

More about our artists...
Alexis Rosen has been dancing Tango for nine years, and teaching for the last four. He first gained notice as an original and creative leader of Tango Nuevo. However, in the last couple of years he has focused closely on close embrace as well. Alexis believes that great dance is built on musicality, connection to the partner, and fundamental movement technique. Many of his classes start with a specific sequence of movements, which are then used to explore those three topics in depth. The first teachers to strongly influence Alexis were Robin Thomas and Mario Consiglieri. While he has learned from numerous other teachers in Buenos Aires and the U.S. since then, the biggest influence on his dance comes from the many great followers he has danced with, including his partner Vanja.

Vanja Modzelewski is a highly experienced dancer in both - open and in close embrace. Her proficiency in the various styles of tango along with her sophisticated musicality has made her one of the better known female dancers in the US. Vanja's dance style is characterized with fluidity and sensual elegance. She has a profound knowledge of movements and partner connection and is a sought after lead who has been teaching group and private classes in tango with a partner and on her own for over 8 years. Currently Vanja is working together with Alexis Rosen. During the past years, among others, she has taught and performed with Constantin Rueger (Germany), Robin Thomas (NY), Murat Erdemsel (Washington, DC), Ney Melo (San Francisco), Hernan Brizuela (Buenos Aires), Armando Orzuza (Buenos Aires) and Junior Cervila (Buenos Aires).

More about our stars:

Oscar was born in Parque Patricios (a well-known tango barrio in Buenos Aires). His parents were avid tango dancers, and, in the 1950's and '60's, they organized three different milongas per week, which regularly drew in 400-500 dancers. Oscar was very much influenced by his father, both by osmosis and discussion. He absorbed the code (codigo) of the milongueros, and when he eventually decided to take up the dance seriously, he already had a background and base that was the envy of many.
Oscar has a distinct style both in his dance and his teaching. He is very milonguero, and is many respected by the old guard in the milongas of BA. He is also extremely popular with his students, who are impressed by his teaching style. He teaches with energy and humor, emphasizing concepts, specializing in improvisation always interpreting the music and respecting the character of the different orchestras. He is especially interested in the dynamics and cadencia of the dance. Everything he teaches is applicable to crowded milongas.
Oscar's unique approach to teaching and his charismatic personality have impressed and delighted his students everywhere. He puts his heart and soul into his classes, and his students respond in kind.

Ana Miguel started her Argentine Tango training in the dance school of Moron Jose Neglia.  She started teaching with the famous Argentine tango instructor and performer, Pocho Pizarro. From 2005 to 2008, Ana Miguel performed in the show “Bacanazo” which was held in the Empire Theatre and the Roman Theatre in BA and she also performed as part of the show at Esquina Carlos Cardel from 2006 to 2010 in BA.  Moreover, Ana Miguel has taught tango at various tango festivals and was also a tango teacher at ACETA (Academia de Estilos de Tango Argentino – Academy of Argentine Tango Styles) from 2006 to 2010.

More about Homer and Cristina Ladas
Homer and Cristina started their tango obsession long before they met each other.   Each with over 11 years of experience emphasizing a fusion of social tango ideologies...   As teachers they are committed to creating a positive class environment where small epiphanies can & do occur in their students.
Homer & Cristina prefer to not use the term 'nuevo' in their approach to tango or in their class titles.   Instead, they like to dance & teach a variety of connected, musical, dynamic, interesting, creative, liberating, etc, ideas/technique/movement.   They both work towards the fusion of all tango concepts via the 'one tango' philosophy in an attempt to reduce barriers that may inhibit themselves or other folks from really finding their own dance...
It has been said, on more than one occasion, that few dancing couples improvise with such skill, personality, and fluidity of movement.   Married since May 2002 they continue to explore deeper facets of their relationship to each other and to tango.

The incomparable Homer and Cristina will teach weekend workshops, and perform at Nocturne (Sat 15th) and Tango Lounge (Fri 14th).

Her main influence and deep understanding tango in dancing and teaching she got from her constant studies all over the years with renown dancers like: Brigitta Winkler, Gustavo Naveda y Giselle Anne, Cecilia Gonzalez, Chicho Frumboli, Pablo Pugliese y Noel Strazza or Tomas Howlin.
Her teaching is based on awareness, analysis of natural movement in combination with her knowledge of technique, structure of the dance and awareness of connection in the couple. Creating a constant dialogue between leaders and followers who share the responsibility of listening and reacting to each other, based on a strong connection to the music.
Her exploration of the techniques of tango, from the very classical to the very experimental, leading and following, including other dance forms like contact improvisation or modern dance makes her believe that there is no "one" Tango. She promote that fusion to reduce borders and let find people their own expression in the dance.
